ARTeFACT Mäntelchen is part of a series of large paintings of objects that relate to the provenance and history of Théodore Géricault's (1791-1824) child portraits of Louise Vernet and the siblings Alfred and Élise Dedreux.
There are some references to military features in the clothing of the children that Géricault painted, like the buttons and an unchildish 'stiffness' of the fabric.
